Why does I am legend have two endings?

There are actually three endings for I Am Legend. The original theatrical cut has Will Smith's character sacrificing himself to save the other survivors. The alternate cut, which was included on the DVD release, features Will Smith's character surviving and realizing that the infected can be cured. The third ending was created for the film's international release and combines elements of the other two endings.
