What is a flash band in horse tack?

A flash band or flash noseband is a type of noseband used in horse tack to keep the horse's mouth closed and prevent it from opening too wide, which can interfere with the rider's control of the horse. It consists of a strap that goes around the horse's nose and is attached to the side rings of the bridle, with a small buckle on the side of the nose. Flash bands are adjustable and can be tightened or loosened to fit the individual horse's head.

The original flash band was actually a small chain and when over-tightened, it could cause significant discomfort to the horse. Modern materials offer a number of humane choices for this piece of tack.

Flash nosebands are commonly used in English riding disciplines such as dressage, show jumping, and eventing, where precision and control are important. They are also used in Western riding disciplines such as reining and cutting.

Flash bands should not be confused with a grackle noseband, which is a similar type of noseband that has a fixed loop around the horse's nose and is used to help control the horse's head carriage and prevent it from tossing its head.
