The original flash band was actually a small chain and when over-tightened, it could cause significant discomfort to the horse. Modern materials offer a number of humane choices for this piece of tack.
Flash nosebands are commonly used in English riding disciplines such as dressage, show jumping, and eventing, where precision and control are important. They are also used in Western riding disciplines such as reining and cutting.
Flash bands should not be confused with a grackle noseband, which is a similar type of noseband that has a fixed loop around the horse's nose and is used to help control the horse's head carriage and prevent it from tossing its head.
