How to Make a Bag With a Hidden Pocket

Hidden-pocket bags are used in magic performances to produce and vanish items that can be held easily in the hand. Although their construction varies in design, material and size, most bags with hidden pockets are relatively small, measuring no more than 10 inches. Of all these, the egg bag is the most common. Make yours with heavy lining material, such as rayon, or a fabric that is woven tightly and completely opaque. The real trick with a hidden pocket is seeing that it stays hidden.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut three rectangles of fabric measuring 9.5 inches by 11 inches. Sew a 1/2-inch hem on one short side of each of the three pieces.

    • 2

Stack all three pieces of fabric together neatly, with the hemmed edges together and the two outside pieces facing wrong-side out. Pin the pieces together along the unsewn edges.

    • 3

Sew a 1/2-inch seam along the three pinned edges. Remove the pins and clip the corners.

    • 4

Turn the sewn bag inside out from the pocket with the two right-side-facing pieces. The pocket where the wrong sides face each other inside the bag will be towards the front; the other is the hidden pocket that is held away from the audience and where business is performed.
