What does entrails mean in the Hunger Games?

The entrails are the internal organs of an animal or person. In the Hunger Games, the entrails are often mentioned in connection with the Capitol's extravagant feasts. For example, in the first book, The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen describes a feast where the Capitol citizens eat "roast suckling pig, roasted suckling pig entrails, and roasted suckling pig intestines." The entrails are also sometimes used as a form of torture or punishment. For example, in the second book, Catching Fire, Katniss is forced to watch as her friend Peeta is whipped and his entrails are exposed. The entrails are a symbol of the Capitol's cruelty and decadence. They are also a reminder of the violence that is inherent in the Hunger Games.
