How do the kids in The Bad Beginning escape from Count Olaf?

The Baudelaire orphans did not escape from Count Olaf in _The Bad Beginning_. He kidnaps them and forces them to perform dangerous chores throughout the book. They do not successfully escape until the end of the second book, _The Reptile Room_, when they are rescued by their Uncle Monty.
