Oedipus realizes that he has fulfilled the prophecy that he would kill his father and marry his mother. He has unwittingly committed patricide and incest, resulting in the downfall of Thebes and immense personal suffering. The revelation at the climax of the play brings about his tragic downfall and deep self-awareness of the consequences of his actions.
