What is an atabal?

Atabal is a term which refers to two different instruments:

1. An early double-headed cylindrical drum of Persian or Central Asian origin, typically made of wood and covered with animal skin, usually played with a pair of sticks. It was used in medieval Europe, especially in processional music.

2. A small single-headed frame drum of Cuban origin, similar to a tambourine, played with the hands. It is traditionally used in Cuban folk music.
