Why did molly tie tommos shoelaces in private peaceful?

In "Private Peaceful", it was Tommo who helped tie Molly's shoelaces and not the other way around. Tommo did it to express his affection for her after Molly had saved his life on several occasions throughout the story, demonstrating Tommo's love, gratitude, and admiration for Molly's strength and selflessness.
