What is a nasheed?

A nasheed (also nasyid, nasheed) is an Arabic term meaning "song," "chant" or "religious song" referring specifically to music that includes the Islamic declaration of faith, the shahada.

Islamic music used for religious purposes is primarily vocal. Most nasheeds are sung a cappella, while others employ percussion, and instruments like strings and wind. While the use of instruments is a point of contention among conservative and progressive Muslims, nasheeds are generally deemed acceptable, as they are primarily used in religious contexts and do not explicitly mention anything controversial or sacrilegious.
