What is brake dancing?

Breakdancing, also called breaking, b-boying/b-girling or break, is a style of street dance that developed as part of the hip-hop culture that emerged in the Bronx in the 1970s. Breakdancing is characterized by its acrobatic moves with combinations of spins, flips and moves on the floor. B-boys dance to the music of hip-hop, specifically breakbeats.

The term "breakdance" originates from the hip hop practice of dancing during the "break" sections of a song, which are instrumental sections of popular songs that are popular. The dance form gained popularity in the 1980s and 1990s when it became featured in Hollywood movies and music videos.

Breakdancing incorporates athletic flips and spins, and moves that require upper-body strength like handstands. Popular breakdance moves include:

- Toprock: Freestyle movements performed standing up.

- Downrock: Movements done on the ground, often on the back or stomach.

- Power moves: Dynamic moves requiring upper-body strength, like windmills and headspins.

- Freezes: Holding still in any position for a few seconds.

- Flips: Somersaults and complex movements.

Breakdancing is performed to hip-hop music and is often combined with other elements of hip-hop culture like graffiti, MCing, and DJing. It has evolved into a global dance form with international competitions and events showcasing the skills and creativity of breakdancers from around the world.

Breaking was introduced as an Olympic sport in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
