How to Do the Shirley Temple in Tap Dancing

Shirley Temple was an exceptional tap dancer with a talent that was well beyond her years. She often appeared in films with Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, another famous tap dancer. The following step was named after her because it’s one she frequently used in her routines.

Instructions

      Facing stage right (to the dancer’s right), flap heel right and flap heel left.

      Execute another flap heel on the right, turning to the front.

      Heel dig your left foot.

    • 4

      Spank on your left foot (which is a back brush) and drop your right heel.

      Tap your left toe behind your right foot. Drop your right heel. Dance on the balls of your feet so you’re easily able to drop your heels.

      Put the steps together: flap heel, flap heel, flap heel to the front, heel dig, spank, drop heel, tap back, drop heel.

      Note that the dancer will make 14 sounds (taps). The count is: "and 1 2 and 3 4 and 5 6 and 7 and 8."
