How to Do a Tuck Turn

Swing dancing consists of two partners: the leader and the follower. The tuck turn, a quick step in swing dancing, puts the follower under the leader's arm and back into her original position. Tuck turns are used to move both partners into position for more complicated dance steps. During a tuck turn, the follower twists away from the leader and conducts a 360-degree spin while holding his hand. At the end of a tuck turn, the two partners can come back together or begin another dance step.

Instructions

  1. Leader's Steps

    • 1

Step forward with your right foot. Continue to hold both of the follower's hands as she steps backward with her left foot.

    • 2

Step forward with your left foot as your partner steps backward with her right foot. Although the follower will turn slightly, continue moving straight forward.

    • 3

Place your right foot forward as if to begin another step, but do not put any weight on it. The purpose of this step is simply to continue the rhythm of the dance. Allow the follower to pull your left hand above her head in anticipation of the tuck turn.

    • 4

Step forward on your right foot after holding it in place for one beat. As you step forward, the follower will quickly turn under your outstretched arm.

    • 5

Step forward on your left foot to rejoin your partner in your original positions.

    Follower's Steps

    • 6

Step backward with your left foot. Continue to hold both of the leader's hands as he steps forward with his right foot.

    • 7

Step backward with your right foot as the leader steps forward with his left foot. Use your right foot to pivot 1/4 turn to the left. Ensure your partner continues moving straight forward while you turn.

    • 8

Pull the leader's left hand above your head as he taps his right foot one time.

    • 9

Twist your body away from your partner while holding his hand loosely. Remain under his outstretched arm as he steps forward on his right foot.

    • 10

Step forward on your right foot to rejoin the leader in your original positions. You can use the tuck turn to lead into another dance move or continue the basic swing step.
