Why did Spain return to New Mexico after the pueblo revolt?

The Pueblo Revolt in 1680 had led to the driving of the Spanish from the area of present-day New Mexico. It took them 12 years before they returned to re-establish their dominion over the region, and to do so they had to rely on military dominance rather than just on religious authority.
