Saldívar had embezzled money from Selena's fan club and boutiques and had been confronted about it by Selena's father, Abraham Quintanilla Jr., on March 31, 1995. Selena met with Saldívar at the Days Inn motel to retrieve financial records, and during their meeting, Saldívar shot Selena once in the back with a .38-caliber revolver. Selena managed to run to the motel lobby, where she collapsed and died.
Saldívar was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole in 2025. She has been denied parole twice, in 2020 and 2021.
