Is belly dance the same as oriental dance?

While belly dance and oriental dance are often used interchangeably, they are not necessarily the same.

* Belly dance is a general term used to refer to a variety of Middle Eastern dance forms that emphasize hip movements and isolations. It can include both traditional and modern styles, and may or may not incorporate props such as veils, swords, or zils.

* Oriental dance is a specific style of belly dance that originated in Egypt in the early 20th century. It is known for its fluid, graceful movements and a focus on elegant hand gestures and body lines. Oriental dance is typically performed to traditional Egyptian music and often includes props such as veils or canes.

In some cases, the terms "belly dance" and "oriental dance" may be used interchangeably to refer to Middle Eastern dance in general. However, it is important to note that there are specific differences between the two styles, and not all belly dancers perform oriental dance.
