What is hayon-hayon dance?

Hayon-Hayon is an ethnic traditional dance of the Sama ethnic groups in the Philippines, particularly in the Sulu and Tawi-Tawi provinces. It is traditionally performed during weddings or any other ceremonial occasions, and it signifies joy and happiness.

Characteristics:

- The main characteristic of the Hayon-Hayon is its smooth and graceful hand and leg movements.

- The dancers usually form lines, holding hands, and move sideways in a wave-like motion.

- The dance tempo is lively, with synchronized steps, graceful sways, and energetic hip movements.

- Both male and female dancers gracefully wave cloth handkerchiefs or scarves while performing, enhancing the aesthetics of the dance.

- The dance is traditionally performed to the accompaniment of traditional musical instruments such as the kulintang, gandingan, and gong.

Meaning:

The word "hayon" in Tausug language means "to weave." The swaying and moving hand movements of the dancers resemble the weaving process. The dance symbolizes unity, harmony, and cooperation, as the dancers move in unison, creating patterns and a harmonious spectacle.
