What are the dance steps of Varsovienne?

Step 1: First Partner

1. Starting position: Man (M) and woman (W) stand side-by-side facing downstage right, slightly apart.

2. M takes W’s right hand in his left hand.

3. M steps forward diagonal right with the left foot and places it down. W steps back diagonal right with the right foot.

4. M closes the left foot to the right. W closes the right foot to the left.

5. Both: On count 5 & (“and”), M raises the left hand and W raises her right hand towards each other. On count 6, M’s left hand rests down on W’s right shoulder and W places her right hand on M’s left shoulder.

Step 2: Second Partner

1. Starting position: M and W stand side-by-side facing upstage left, slightly apart.

2. M steps back diagonal left with the left foot. W steps forward diagonal left with the right foot.

3. M closes the left foot to the right. W closes the right foot to the left.

4. M raises his right hand and W raises her left hand towards each other.

5. M drops his right hand to rest on W’s left shoulder. W drops her left hand to rest on M’s right shoulder.

Step 3: Turn Under the Arch

1. M and W make half turn away from each other: M turns left and W turns right.

2. M and W hold the inside hands and face each other in a mirror position.

3. M steps with the left and brushes the right foot forward in a “passé” while W steps with the right foot and brushes the left foot forward.

4. M closes to the right and simultaneously takes W’s left hand in his left hand while dropping his right hand. W steps left and takes M’s right hand with her left hand.

5. M and W turn in place (CW for M, CCW for W) around M’s right shoulder and W’s left shoulder.

6. On the last turn, M steps sideways to the left with the left foot and W steps to the right with the right foot.

Step 4: Back to Back

1. M and W are standing beside each other, in a "back to back" position, facing the same direction.

2. Both make a quarter turn inward (to the left) so that they are at a 45-degree angle from one another.

3. M and W join their right hands. This handhold allows for a close connection, with little space between them.

Step 5: Turning Together

1. M and W then take three turning steps together. These are executed in a circular pattern, with M making a circular motion with his left foot and W making a circular motion with her right foot.

2. Each step involves an alternating weight change, where one person's step forward coincides with the other person's step backward, creating an interconnected circular movement.

3. These three turning steps are essentially waltz steps, with rise and fall.

Repeat Steps 1-5

The dance then continues, alternating between the first partner step and the second partner step, followed by the turn under the arch, back to back, and turning together steps. This sequence is repeated throughout the dance.
