What is The Song of Raoul Cambrai about?

The Song of Raoul Cambrai (c. 1190–1200)[1] or The Tale of Raoul de Cambrai is an Old French epic poem. It is a late-twelfth-century chanson de geste and contains 8,554 lines decasyllabic verse.[2]

Set in the ninth-century County of Vermandois, the story tells the conflict between Raoul, vassal of the king, and his lord, the Count of Vermandois. Raoul takes revenge for the death of his father Begon, killed in a hunting accident. The conflict widens with two bloody battles involving many noble combatants. Finally, at the Battle of Arras, the hero is killed by treachery when he is fighting King Louis III.
