Who invented the phrase rhythm and blues?

The phrase "rhythm and blues" was coined by Jerry Wexler in 1949 who, as editor of Billboard magazine, used "R&B" as an abbreviation for "race music", a previously-used name for music by and for African American artists that reflected and preserved some elements of African musical roots but was still rooted in Western popular music (see Rhythm and blues § Definition and scope).
