The name "Utah Jazz" was selected in honor of Utah's jazz heritage when the franchise moved to Salt Lake City in 1979 from New Orleans, where they were initially formed as the New Orleans Jazz.
Utah holds numerous annual jazz and music festivals in several large and small venues all over the state. For over three decades, Utah has consistently ranked within the top ten states per capita for hosting events that reflect jazz heritage.
