What are the Dixie chicks?

The Dixie Chicks are an American country music band consisting of sisters Martie Maguire and Emily Robison, and lead singer Natalie Maines. The band was formed in 1989 in Dallas, Texas, and released their debut album, Thank Heavens for Dale Evans, in 1990. They achieved mainstream success with their 1998 album, Wide Open Spaces, which won two Grammy Awards. The Dixie Chicks have since released six more studio albums, including Fly (1999), Home (2002), Taking the Long Way (2006), Gaslighter (2020), and The Chicks (2023). They have won 13 Grammy Awards, including three Album of the Year awards, and have sold more than 30 million albums worldwide.

The Dixie Chicks are known for their outspoken political views, which have sometimes been controversial. In 2003, lead singer Natalie Maines made comments critical of then-President George W. Bush during a concert in London, England. This led to a backlash against the band, including boycotts of their music and concerts. The Dixie Chicks have since continued to speak out about their political beliefs, and have been vocal supporters of Democratic candidates and causes.

In 2020, the Dixie Chicks changed their name to The Chicks. They explained that they wanted to "embrace a more inclusive name" that would reflect their growth as a band.
