The Powerpuff Girls Z are three superheroes named Momoko Akatsutsumi, Miyako Gotōkuji, and Kaoru Matsubara, initially normal 13-year-old girls who live in Tokyo City with their father Professor Utonium and talking dog/hamster hybrid named Ken-chan. They are accidentally infused with the essence of Chemical Z at the same time that a chemical plant explosion creates the villain Fuzzy. After receiving superpowers, they become crime fighters and must balance their heroic duties with their lives as normal middle school students.
Powerpuff Girls Z was the first anime adaptation of an American Cartoon Network series, and its production was aided by the animation production company TMS Entertainment, which had previously worked with Cartoon Network on projects such as Teen Titans and Justice League Unlimited. The series received mostly positive reviews from critics, with praise for its animation, character designs, and humor, though it was criticized for being too similar to the original series.
Following its success, Powerpuff Girls Z received two spin-off series: Demashita! Powerpuff Girls Z Returns (2006–2007) and Powerpuff Girls Z: The Movie (2007). The series has been adapted into several manga, toy merchandise, and video games, and has also been dubbed in English and broadcast on Cartoon Network in Europe, Asia, and Latin America.
