The crip walk is a fast-paced dance that can seem complicated. The actual moves themselves are simple. Good crip walkers know how to combine the moves in a fast and seamless fashion that makes the crip walk seem much harder than it should. The crip walk usually starts with your feet together. The crip dancer is usually getting into the music, so he'll be bobbing up and down. The crip walker will then start moving his leg in a series of motions that can seem confusing but are actually simple. The basic move is a foot cross. It starts with a turn and a jump to the right. The right should land in front and on the heel with the left in back on the heels. While turning to the beat, the crip walker will jump to the left to where he started crossing his legs. Then, he jumps to the left some more, with his left foot in front and his right in back. His arms will be waving backward and forward to the beat. This is the basic movement of the crip walk.
Vary things up by moving to one side more and turning your body to the side. Bend your back and get lower to the ground. Moving your body up and down as your legs move will look impressive on the dance floor. Briefly stand on your tip toes and kick one foot in the air. You can also stop briefly and pump your fists in the air when the music is appropriate. This is usually appropriate during chanted choruses in hip hop. There is no rigid format for the crip walk. Hip hop and rap are spontaneous, exciting forms of music and the crip walk follows suit by being free flowing and improvisational.
