How to Perform a Feather Step

A feather step contains 3 or 4 steps used in the international style foxtrot dance. Feathering, as it is popularly called, is an action that is fundamental not only in the foxtrot but in other dances as well. Many moves in the slow foxtrot were later adapted into the waltz. The foxtrot is a passionate dance with both slow and quick movements.

Know the regular step count of the slow-slow-quick-quick. This is done in a circular motion as a square step and consists of the swaying of legs during certain steps.

    • 2

Choose your music. To perform a feather step, you will need some form of flowing, perky and quick rhythm music. Popular music to perform this style of dance combines slow and quick tempos together.

    • 3

Realize that there are several variations of the foxtrot. Faster foxtrots become the swing dance or the jitterbug and are known as a "one-step" or "quickstep."
