Instructions

  1. Finding Your Rhythm

    • 1

Turn the music on and listen. If you have trouble finding the beat, change the way you listen to music. Do not listen to the words, or melody. Instead, find a beat you can hear repeating itself over and over again. It may be a drum or a bass guitar creating this beat, but either way, find the underlying sound that repeats, and tap your hand on your leg along with that beat.

    • 2

Now that you have found the beat, try walking to the beat. Take a step each time you hear the sound. Between each step, let your knees bend: step, bend, step, bend. Walk around the room to the music, getting comfortable to moving with music.

Hold your arms up while you walk, elbows should be bent so that your forearms are parallel to the floor. Let them swing naturally from this position. Then take your rhythm to the next level, snap your fingers in between steps: step, snap, step, snap.

Stand facing the mirror; instead of walking to the beat, take a step to the side. Repeat this on both sides: step left, bend, step right, bend, step left, bend, step right, bend. The steps should only be about shoulder-width apart. Let your arms swing along naturally, keeping them bent in the running position.

Now add a tap along with the bend---if you step with the left foot, tap your right foot close to your left foot as you bend both knees. Now step right, tap the left foot close to the right foot as both knees bend. Continue to let your arms swing naturally as you repeat this move on both sides.

Continue the steps and now begin turning. Use the four walls of the room as a guide. First the mirror, then the wall to the left, next wall to the left, next wall and finally back to the mirror. This is also called the bus stop, a basic party dance.
