How many forms of dances are there at the basic level?

At the most basic level, there are four main forms of dance:

1. Folk Dance: Folk dance refers to dances that have been passed down through generations within a particular culture. These dances often represent the traditions and customs of a specific region or community. Examples include the Indian Bhangra, the American Square Dance, the Irish Step Dance, and the Chinese Dragon Dance.

2. Social Dance: Social dances are designed for pairs or groups of people to dance together in a social setting. These dances are typically performed at events like parties, weddings, or social gatherings. Some examples of social dances include the Waltz, Salsa, Tango, and Swing.

3. Ballet: Ballet is a highly technical and disciplined dance form that originated in the Italian Renaissance. It involves precise movements and graceful techniques and is often performed with classical music.

4. Modern Dance: Modern dance emerged as a breakaway from the rigid structure of classical ballet in the early 20th century. It allows for more freedom of expression and movement and emphasizes the individual dancer's interpretation and creativity.
