How to Interpret Dancesport Score Sheets

DanceSport competitions feature incredible dances by amateur dancers. In these competitions, numerous types of dances appear, ranging from the Viennese waltz to the paso doble. For DanceSport competitions in the United States, the four broad skill levels range from syllabus to championship. Competing couples vie for the highest rankings in their skill level. Between five and 11 judges rank these couples based on three factors: skills, presentation and showmanship.

Instructions

    • 1

Look at the far left-hand column of the score sheet. This column lists the couples' names and their competition numbers.

    • 2

Find the series of columns with the judges' numbers. These are typically two-digit numbers such as 01, 02, 03 or 11.

    • 3

Choose one of the judges' columns. This column will contain the numbers 1 through 3, if three couples are competing, or 1 through 5 if five couples are competing. These numbers represent one judge's ranking of the couples. The judge gives a 1 to the couple who he thought was the best in that round, a 2 to the couple who he thought was second-best, and so on.

    • 4

Locate the series of columns labeled 1, 1-2, 1-3 and 1-4. The number of columns in this series will correspond with the number of competitors in that round.

    • 5

Follow the 1 column downward. This column tabulates the number of judges who ranked a particular couple as 1. The 1-2 column lists the number of judges who ranked a particular couple as 2.

    • 6

Locate the "Result" column on the far right of the score sheet. This column presents the rankings for the event. Look down the column until you find 1. The couple who received the 1 was the winner of the round. A 2 in the "Result" column indicates which couple was runner-up.
