Children's Canadian Dance Festivals

Dance festivals with a focus on children are held throughout Canada. All ages of children are represented, and the choice of dances offers educational opportunities, including learning about another culture. Kids don't have to be trained or accomplished dancers to participate. Anyone is welcome to attend.
  1. Ottawa International Children's Festival

    • The Ottawa International Children's Festival (ottawachildrensfestival.ca/home) offers dance for children as well as other activities. It goes on annually in Ottawa and targets children ages 4 to 15 during its five day run. Some events include wee dance and wee groove where children dance with family members. Dancers are present to help out with dances. At nightfall, a show uses dance to present stories.

    Vancouver International Children's Festival

    • In Vancouver, the Vancouver International Children's Festival (childrensfestival.ca) spans a week at Granville Island. There are many opportunities to experience dance at the festival. For example, the Step Afrika show gives demonstrations of dances related to Africa. Farfalle is a multimedia dance experience. Children sit on mats around the stage to view the event.

    Whistler Children's Art Festival

    • The Whistler Children's Art Festival (artswhistler.com) takes place in Whistler, British Columbia, over a weekend each August. This event features workshops that cover art activities including dance. Each activity is specific to a certain age group of children, and one is for the whole family. Overall, the aim of the festival is to not only give kids the chance to use their imagination but also to introduce them to the arts, including many types of dance. All events are free.

    Petits Bonheurs

    • At the Petits Bonheurs (petitsbonheurs.ca/2000onze/index.html) in Quebec, children up to 6 and babies are given an introduction to dance and other art forms. There are shows, and workshops present educational sessions in a fun way during this weeklong event every May. Destinies Crusaders shows the passage of time through dance. Parapapel features only two people and a roll of paper. The presentation requires the children to focus on their imagination through the performers folding paper, dancing and cutting paper to tell a story. Ticket prices vary by event.
