How to Write an Historical Dance Review

Dance combines movement in accordance with music while telling a story, expressing feelings, making social commentary, or just for fun or to create an aesthetically pleasing experience. Historical dance forms refer to an enormous variety of particular dances from the past such as the fox trot or swing or historical dances from the distant past such as renaissance dances. Writing a review on a particular form of historical dance requires a good amount of research.

Instructions

    • 1

Read up on the historical dance you plan to review to give yourself adequate background knowledge before you see the performance. Find out how and where it originated, how long it was practiced, what the steps and techniques were and who some of the more prominent dancers of the form were.

    • 2

Take notes during the dance performance. Don't censor yourself as you write. Just jot down freely your thoughts and emotions.

    • 3

Start your review by crafting a sentence that sums up your general thoughts while stating the name of the dance company, choreographer and composer as well as the date and name of the performance. For example, you could write "The February first performance of Northeast Swing's 'AnySwing Goes' choreographed by Bret Amos set to Benny Goodman's music was nothing short of spectacular."

    • 4

State your initial reasons for your opinions about the show. Use the technical performance of the dancers, the costumes, historical accuracy and choreography to back up your statements.

    • 5

Mention any dancers or pieces of choreography that stood out and explain why. Discuss whether the performance was a re-creation of an historical work or a fresh spin on an older style. Explain the historical significance of the style and if the company did it justice or not. Recommend that the reader attend or not attend and justify it in a few words.

    • 6

Add a final sentence explaining where the reader can get a hold of tickets.
