How to Make a Ballet Bar Made of PVC Plastic

A ballet bar (or barre) is used during rehearsals for stretching or as a support for dancers while they are practicing moves that require balance. Ballet barres can be attached directly to a wall, but many ballet schools also use portable models that can be moved around a studio during rehearsals. You can construct a simple ballet barre from PVC plastic and other inexpensive materials that is lightweight and easy to move around.

Things You'll Need

  • 2-inch-diameter PVC pipe (20 feet total length)
  • 2 PVC T-joints, 2-inch
  • 2 elbow joints, 2-inch
  • Hacksaw
  • Measuring tape
  • Rubber drawer liner

Instructions

    • 1

Cut one long piece of PVC pipe to a length of 4 feet using the hacksaw. This will be the top of the barre. If you wish to make a longer barre, cut this piece to the desired length.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of PVC pipe to a length of 38 inches. These will be the side pieces.

    • 3

Cut four pieces of PVC pipe to a length of 1 1/2 feet. These will be the support braces.

    • 4

Connect the elbow joints to both ends of the top piece, then connect the side pieces to the other opening of the joint.

    • 5

Connect the center of the T-joints to the bottom of the side pieces, then connect the support braces to both sides of each T-joint so that the support braces are perpendicular to the top piece.

    • 6

Stand the barre up and make sure all joints are secure. You may wish to place some rubber drawer-liner material under the supports to keep the barre from sliding around while it is being used.
