How to Dance Tahitian-Style

Tahiti is a large tropical island located in the Pacific Ocean, and has been inhabited by Polynesians since around 300 A.D. Tahiti is known for its volcanic mountains, black sand beaches, paintings by Paul Gauguin and most of all, its world-famous Tahitian dance. Tahitian dance is much like the Hawaiian hula, but the biggest difference is the hip movement: Tahitian-style dance emphasizes the hips, while the Hawaiians focus on their hands.

  1. How to Dance Tahitian-Style

    • 1

Place your right arm at mid-breast, and extend your left arm. Keep your left arm flexible; it should flow as freely as the ocean.

    • 2

Be sure your wrists are bent and your pinky fingers are below your other fingers.

    • 3

Step out with your left leg, about 1 foot from your right, while extending your hip to the opposite side. If you step out with your right leg, your left hip will be extended. As you step out, keep your feet planted on the ground while you move only your hips and arms.

    • 4

Mimicking the waves of the ocean, move your hips from side to side as you move your extended arms in the same direction.

    • 5

Repeat the motions while listening to some authentic Tahitian or Polynesian dance music, and dress as a native would in a bikini top and a sarong around the hips, adorned with beautiful floral leis.
