Boot Scootin Boogie Dance Steps

The Boot Scootin' Dance dance steps owe their inception to the grand old west. Back then cowboys, eager for companionship and the company of two-legged folk, would rush to the dance floor without taking off their spurs. This limited the cowboy's ability for close, intricate footwork. To avoid endangering himself or his partners, dance steps that had the feet wide apart or turns on the heels or toes were developed. Boot Scootin' Boogie, recorded by Brooks in Dunn in 1991, is an example of those wide-legged dances meant for the cowboy or -girl at heart--with or without spurs.

    Heel and Slide

    • Tap the heel of your left foot forward and to the left. Pick up your left knee and hook your left heel in front of your right leg. Your left heel should go to the right of your right leg, or the outside of your right leg. Step forward with your left foot and slide your right foot next to your left. Repeat this section.

    Step to the Left

    • Step to the left with your left foot and turn to the right by pivoting on the ball of your right foot and face the back of the room. Bend your right knee and allow yourself to go down a little, then stand up and push your left hand against your left hip, allowing your weight to shift to your right foot.

    Step to the Right

Bend your left knee and allow yourself to go down a little, then stand up and push your right hand against your right hip, allowing your weight to shift to your left foot.

    Hitch and Clap

    • Step forward with your left foot, raise your right knee (also called hitch), then pivot to the left on the ball of your left foot so that your right side is facing the center of the room. Put your right foot down in front of your left foot, wait a beat, and clap. Repeat the entire dance, starting from Section 1.
