Line Dance Exercise

Line dancing, or any active form of dance, helps to increase your heart rate and tone your muscles. Line dancing is broken into six separate levels, depending on the difficulty of the steps and the experience of the dancer. The levels are separated through many factors, including steps, counts, turns and the complexity of step sequences.
  1. Novice Level

    • The novice through beginner level line dances typically fall within 24 through 48 counts. The counts dictate the length of the dance or the step sequence. The longer you are dancing and actively moving and the more complex the steps you are performing, the more effective the workout will be.

Beginner and novice dancers use turns, pivots, grapevines and shuffles. Choose upbeat music to dance to, as this will help with motivation and energy levels.

    Intermediate Level

    • Intermediate level line dancers can reach up to 64 counts in a dance. They also begin to incorporate kicks and jumps, such as mule kicks, into their combinations. The steps are encouraged to have less repetition and greater variety. Learning more complicated combinations with less repetition of steps will help exercise your mind and memory as well as your body

    Advanced Level Line Dancing

    • An advanced level line dance can last for the length of an entire song, up to 240 counts, which is about four minutes of music. As with most exercise, the longer the routine the more calories that are burned. The dance includes the jumps and kicks present in the intermediate level and can have multiple sections.
