Dancing is a fun, low-impact way to exercise your entire body, according to Dr. Cedric Bryant, a vice president of the American Council on Exercise. In Des Moines, Iowa, you can dance at one of many dance clubs, each offering its own kind of music. Whether you're in the mood for hip-hop, country, classic rock 'n' roll or ballroom dancing, Des Moines offers several dance clubs that cater to dancers in their 30s and 40s.

  1. Blues on Grand

    • Blues on Grand, winner of the Blues Foundation's "Keeping the Blues Alive" award in 2002 as the best blues club in the nation, calls itself the home of the blues in Des Moines. Blues on Grand features live blues music every Tuesday through Saturday night, with artists such as Davina and the Vagabonds, J.P Soars, the Bob Pace Band, Matt Woods and the Thunderbolts, Ronnie Baker Brooks and W.C. Clark. The club also feature blues jams on Thursday nights and a Friday work-release party from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. every Friday night. Blues on Grand has a laid-back atmosphere, with appetizers served all night, a large dance space and pool tables.

    Miss Kitty's Dance Hall and Cyber Saloon

    • Miss Kitty's boasts pool tables, dart boards, trivia games and video games in addition to a large dance floor. The club serves appetizers and snacks throughout the night, and there's a live deejay on Friday and Saturday nights. Miss Kitty's opens at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday through Friday and 7:00 p.m. Saturday. The club begins each night as a gathering place for the 30s and 40s crowd, with country music and classic rock tunes, but after 10:00 p.m. a younger crowd typically joins in, and the music gradually changes to contemporary rock 'n' roll.

    Denny Arthur's

    • Denny Arthur's, located in the Des Moines Metro in Urbandale, caters to an older crowd. With a large dance floor, low-priced drinks, 13 pool tables and 80s' dance tunes, Denny Arthur's has been a popular night club in the Des Moines Metro for more than 30 years. Denny Arthur's is open Monday through Thursday from 3:00 p.m. until 11:00 p.m., and from 5:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.

    Val Air Ballroom

    • Catering to the mid-30s and 40s group, the Val Air Ballroom, located in West Des Moines, has a large dance floor and features events such as stand-up comedy acts and live concerts. On Friday and Saturday evenings when no live entertainment is booked, the Val Air offers a live deejay playing music ranging from country to hip-hop to classic rock 'n' roll. The Val Air is open from 7:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m. Friday and Saturday nights.
