What does directions mean in dance?

Directions refer to the paths along which dancers move within the defined space of the dance environment. Each movement is typically composed of a combination of these primary directions:

1. Forwards: Moving in the direction that faces the front or the main orientation of the dance space.

2. Backwards: Moving in the opposite direction of forwards, toward the back or rear of the dance space.

3. Sideways: Moving to one's right or left, towards the sides of the dance space.

4. Diagonal: Combinations of forwards/backwards and sideways directions, enabling movement along a diagonal path within the dance space.

5. Up: Movement that travels in a vertical direction, such as jumps or lifts, moving the dancer upwards.

6. Down: Movement that travels in a vertical direction, such as falling, stepping onto a lower level or bending the body downwards.

7. Turning: Movement that rotates the body around its axis, either in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction.
