What is an arial in dance?

In dance, an "arial" is a term that is used to describe a movement in which the dancer jumps into the air and performs a series of movements while airborne. This term is primarily associated with ballet, where it is used to refer specifically to a jump in which the dancer leaps into the air and quickly rotates the body while in the air, before landing on one foot. The aerial can also be incorporated into other dance styles such as contemporary, jazz, and acrobatics.
