To create the T-shirt tutu you will need two and a half yards of two different colors of tulle, a T-shirt, thread of a similar color to the shirt or tutu material, a rotary cutter, ruler and a self-healing mat.
Choose what color you will use for the bottom and top pieces of the tutu. The top will be the shorter layer, at 12 inches wide by 90 inches long. The bottom layer should be 12 inches wide by 90 inches long.
Once you have folded each piece of tulle in half, separate from one another, you will need to stack them on top of each other lining up the cut edges. The folded edges will not line up, but will lay in a stair formation. Secure the cut edges together with pins.
The cut edges will then be secured together by using a basting stitch on a sewing machine, but do not back stitch. Ensure there is ample thread left over at the ends of the fabric.
By tugging on the hanging thread and simultaneously gathering the tulle, the tutu shape will begin to take form. Ensure the waist of the tutu will fit around the bottom hem of the T-shirt to be used, as these two pieces will be linked together.
The tulle will then need to be pinned to the T-shirt with the shorter layer of tulle on top. Use a medium zig-zag stitch on your sewing machine to attach the tutu to the T-shirt, back stitching to secure it completely.
