What are the five positions of classical ballet?

1. First Position

- Stand with your heels touching and your toes turned out.

- Bring the heel of one turned-out foot to touch halfway between the instep and the heel of the other foot with the toes gently pressing against each other.

- Feet pointing forward, straight knee positions.

2. Second Position

- Place one turned out foot with heel next to the mid-foot of the turned out foot.

- Feet parallel, straight knees.

3. Third Position

- Place one turned-out foot directly in front of the other, with the heel resting gently against the instep.

- One foot in front of the other, pointing forward, straight knee positions.

4. Fourth Position

- Cross one turned out foot in front of the other while keeping the feet turned out, creating an "X" shape with the toes.

- One foot slightly in front of the other with both feet pointing outward, straight knee positions.

5. Fifth Position

- Cross the turned-out feet so the front foot crosses directly over the big toe joint of the back foot.

- Feet directly crossing in a parallel line, straight knees.
