How to Write a Moving Poem

When you sit down to write a poem, you want it to speak to and move people. A good poem has the ability to transport emotions. A great combination of words has the ability to change lives. Writing a powerful and convincing poem might seem like a daunting task, but if it comes from your heart and carries a unique voice, it will have the ability to touch and speak to anyone.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the theme of your poem. Your theme could be a memorable experience, a description of events, or a description of a place. It is useful to write about something you know well or something you have experienced in the past. If you are able to remember what you have chosen to write about clearly and if you can observe your subject carefully, then you are more likely to truly express how you feel. This gives an emotional weight to your words, moving the reader with a powerful force. A good poem comes from the poet's unique perspective.

    • 2

Describe the feeling within your poem. Description is crucial in conveying emotion and it must be a personal and honest description. If you are writing about the sea, do not describe it as "big and blue", but rather how you feel when you see it in front of you, what emotions it stirs within you, and how you see it through your eyes. This way, the reader can really understand the depth of your experience. Your words must carry emotions that are unique to you. Start from making a list of words that pop into your mind while thinking about or witnessing your subject.

    • 3

Define the mood of your poem. Think about how you want to express yourself and the way you wish to portray your feelings through your poetry. Your poem might carry a sad or upsetting mood, creating a gloomy atmosphere. It might be a funny poem, producing a light, uplifting atmosphere. The mood of your poem entirely depends on the emotions you wish to convey, and if this is done effectively, your poem will possess the power to bring the reader to his knees in despair, or rolling on the floor in fits of laughter.

Know the audience. Knowing your audience is highly important in writing a moving and powerful poem. Think about who you are writing for and who you wish to speak to through your writing. From broken-hearted lovers to single mothers, poetry has the ability to be a voice for just about anyone.
