What is the job of a poet laureate?

A poet laureate is a poet officially appointed by a monarch or government, usually for life, to create poems on designated occasions or for the monarch or government. The poet laureate is expected to compose poems to commemorate important national events, such as the birth of a royal child, the death of a monarch, or a major historical event. The poet laureate may also be called upon to write poems for special occasions, such as the state opening of Parliament or a royal wedding. In addition to writing poetry, the poet laureate may also be expected to undertake other public duties, such as giving lectures, readings, and workshops, or serving as a judge or mentor for poetry competitions.
