How to Write a Master's Essay

Attending graduate school is a major step in anyone's life. Whether applying to a school for art or finance, the cover letter should reflect a passion and desire to achieve within the program---and in life. A master's program acceptance is contingent upon a transcript, references, experience and a strong essay. The essay, or cover letter, should be brimming with personality and professionalism. According to the College Board, the essay should help propel the candidate into the program, and account for voids in the transcript, like low grades. It should be detailed, personal and passionate. It is also essential to make sure to write a cover letter based on the requirements of length and topic set forth by the program.

Start by taking down some notes about your life. Detail what inspired you to apply to graduate school, whether this is due to your studies as an undergraduate or for a personal reason. Note any highlights from your academic or personal career; these could be awards, certifications, publications or moments when your dream became clear and vivid to you.

When complete, look at the list and decide which of the topics would make for a compelling and professional cover letter. You should be able to link personal experiences to your career goals. For instance, mention that your sixth grade trip to the zoo made a lasting impression on you, which led you to aspire to become a veterinarian. Be able to provide information about your life and passion.

Research the school that you want to attend. Make sure you take note of their programs, special features and any professors who have made an impact in the field in which you want to study. Highlight a few points that you will mention in the essay, letting the admissions team know that you have made an informed decision.

Start the cover letter by creating a winning opening sentence. Hook your readers by pulling them into your story. Let them know who you are by writing a short introduction or providing some insight about your career and academic goals.

    • 5

Expand on your introduction by explaining your goals, and provide some information about your accomplishments. Let them know about one or two detailed experiences which have made it clear to you that you should attain a master's degree. Do not rehash your entire resume. Discuss what you like about the program, letting the admissions team know you are interested for a specific reason. Make sure to adhere to any requirements that the graduate school has asked you to write about.

End the essay on a strong note. Make a lasting impression by leaving the admissions team with an understanding of who you are, what you want and how your life experiences have made you a good candidate for the program.
