How did the tradition of Geisha begin?

Geisha culture evolved from the traditions of the ''onna-geisha,'' or female entertainers who catered to male samurai clients. Initially, both men and women worked in the pleasure districts, but during the 18th century, female entertainers gradually gained prominence and became associated with the refined arts of music, dance, conversation and tea ceremony.
