Places for Young Writers to Get Published

Getting published in a literary magazine is difficult. For young and developing writers, submitting to just any literary magazine is not a great strategy because they will be competing with writers who have already had long careers. Since most print literary magazines publish two to three works of fiction and a handful of poems per issue, it is a better strategy for young writers to take advantage of magazines geared towards their age group.
  1. The Blue Pencil Online

    • The Blue Pencil Online is a literary journal that publishes on the Internet. It accepts fiction, poetry, essays, interviews, translations, monologues, one-act plays and scenes from plays. Writers must be between 12 and 18 years old. Writers can only submit two different genres of work at a time. The submission guidelines are detailed; check them before sending in any works.

    FictionPress

    • FictionPress is a website and online community of writers where anyone can self-publish work on any topic or in any genre. It is free and easy to use. There are support networks, editing resources and forums. FictionPress hosts more 1.2 million works (as of 2011), and the site is growing. Review functions allow other writers to leave feedback, encouragement and praise. Developing writers can use this site to improve their work.

    The Claremont Review

    • The Claremont Review is a literary magazine published in Canada that accepts work from anyone writing in English who is between 13 and 19 years old. The Claremont Review generally publishes fiction, poetry and artwork. The submission guidelines suggest writers do not submit works of science fiction, romance or fantasy or poetry that rhymes. Writers and artists are paid $10 for accepted pieces (as of 2011) and receive a free copy of the magazine.

    The Young Writers Society

    • The Young Writers Society, an online writing collective geared toward young writers, publishes a journal annually. The journal accepts works of fiction, poetry, art and photography. This magazine does not pay its writers, but it does provide published writers and artists with free copies of the magazine. Submissions are generally open to anyone writing in English who is younger than 25 years old, though some exceptions can be made, according to the website.
