How to Get Published in an Art Magazine

Getting published in an art magazine requires an intimate understanding of the world of art as much as it does a skill with writing. Established art glossies, like Art in America and ARTNews, and experimental art independents, such as Juxtapoz and BOMB, look for writers who have deep knowledge of and connections to the art world. Developing this knowledge and these connections, as well as honing your craft as a writer, will help you to achieve the goal of seeing your work published in an art magazine.

Connect with artists in your local community. Start with friends or neighbors, and ask them if you can spend an afternoon shadowing them or treat them to lunch while interviewing them about their work. Develop strong relationships with artists in the genres you most enjoy.

Network with professionals in the art world. Attend workshops and events hosted by the local arts alliance and meet the alliance director or board members. Visit area art galleries and make a point to connect with the gallery curator. Sign up to attend gallery openings and showcases.

Research the art magazines in which you would most like to be published, checking out their submission guidelines and reading some past issues, many of which are available online for free. Tailor your queries and article submissions to the primary tone, style and audience of each magazine.
