Open up your Moleskine so you're looking at the inside of the front cover and the first page of your book. Write your name and contact information on the inside of the front cover as well as a reward if it gets lost and someone finds it for you. The reward you offer comes down to what you use your Moleskine for and how important its contents are to you.
Number your pages in the top or bottom outer corners. You'll use these numbers later on in your index to keep track of what you've written thus far.
Print out a small calendar and tape it in the back of your Moleskine, preferably on the back of the very last page. Note that the calendar's used as a reference and to help in planning. If you're only using your Moleskine to jot down ideas when they come to mind, you can skip this small detail.
Save approximately 10 to 20 pages in the back of your Moleskine for an index. If you write a poem on page one, you'll then want to list the title of the poem and its page number in your index. Due to their size, creating an index will make it easier later on when you want to look something up.
Insert a pocket in the back of your Moleskine if one hasn't come with it. Glue the pocket to the inside of the back cover or use a small folder that fits nicely in the back of your Moleskine. Use this pocket to jot down notes on note cards or to hold business cards.
Use a pencil or a pen that won't smudge when writing in your Moleskine. Ensure the tools you use don't bleed onto the next page to save room. When you've finished, place your pen or pencil in the pocket at the back of your Moleskine so it's available the next time you open your book.
