Restate the thesis. The thesis is the main idea of your literary analysis essay, stated in sentence format. You should first present your thesis in your introductory paragraph and then explore it in the body of your paper. The thesis should be stated, once again, in the conclusion. Don't use the identical sentence. Rephrase your thesis, and present it in a different way. This reminds the readers of the overall meaning of what they've just read signals that the end of the paper is near.
Summarize. In the conclusion, give a brief overview of the points you made in the body of your literary analysis. You might want to look at the topic sentences for each of your body paragraphs---they should be mini-thesis sentences that tell what each paragraph is about. You can use those topic sentences in your conclusion by rewriting them. This will ensure that you include information from every paragraph in your conclusion.
Make a conclusion. The purpose of a literary analysis is to draw a conclusion about a work of literature. Your concluding paragraph is the place to state, in a very clear and concise way, the exact conclusion that you've made. Perhaps you've analyzed the shadow and light motifs present in a work of literature. The conclusion is the place for you to say what impact those motifs have on the work as a whole. Conclude your literary analysis with a statement that identifies your purpose: Tell the reader why you've written the paper.
End with a punch. Conclude your literary analysis with a particularly interesting piece of writing. Choose a quote from the literary work in question or end with a piece of insight about the implications of your analysis. You'll leave the reader with a positive memory.
Stay away from new ideas. The conclusion of a literary analysis shouldn't introduce any new ideas. Its only purpose is to sum up and lead the reader out of your analysis. If you introduce new thoughts in your conclusion, you won't have room to develop them fully. The place to introduce new ideas in your literary analysis is the introduction.
