Grants for Literature & Writing

It can be difficult to make a living as a writer until you are established with it. Fortunately, there are several grants available, from government and other sources, to help fund writing projects. Most grants are designed to help writers who have already had a publication or two continue in their chosen careers.
  1. National Endowment for the Arts Literature Fellowships

    • The National Endowment for the Arts offers $25,000 fellowships to published authors working on new projects. The NEA offers prose and poetry fellowships in alternating years. In 2010, it awarded prose fellowships and opened applications for poetry fellowships. In 2011, poetry fellows will be announced and applications will be accepted for prose fellowships.

The purpose of the fellowships is to allow recipients to travel, research and write a specific project. In order to qualify, applicants must have been previously published. Full guidelines are available on the NEA's website.

Interested persons may fill out a grant application online. They will also have to submit copies of published work in order to be considered for the grant.

    John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation

    • The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation offers fellowships to writers and artists who have proven themselves to be of exceptional talent. This fellowship is offered once a year. Its purpose is to fund writing projects for qualified people. There is no set amount for this grant; funding varies based on demonstrated need and ability.

Interested people can apply for this fellowship online. Applicants must provide references and samples of published works. Self-published authors are not eligible for this fellowship.

    Radcliffe Institution Fellowship

    • The Radcliffe Institution offers fellowships to writers deemed to be of considerable promise. This annual fellowship is available to writers who have already been published in at least two journals. In order to qualify, writers must have earned a doctorate in English or creative writing. Writers can receive up to $65,000 for a year-long fellowship. Successful applicants will be expected to reside in the Boston area during the course of the fellowship.

Interested writers may submit a letter of intent by regular mail. The letter should include a description of the project as well as the curriculum vitae of all people involved in the project.
