Use the Internet, or literary magazines, to read reviews about books so that you can get an idea of the kind of book you may enjoy. Check out book selling sites and read the blurbs of books, which can also help you decide what you'd like to read.
Purchase your book either over the Internet or at your local bookstore once you decide which book you would like to try.
Find a good place to read -- somewhere quiet away from the TV and other distractions -- and use a comfy chair, or bed; preferably somewhere you can put your feet up and you don't mind sitting for long periods.
Make a hot drink, sit down and begin your book.
Read for a while without stopping. The first chapter or two is always the hardest, but once you get sucked in by the narrative you won't be able to stop reading and it will become more pleasurable as you go.
