What is a summary of Ile by Eugene

In Ile, Eugene O'Neill's play first produced in 1922, Samuel Evans, a farmer on the island of Martinique, is at odds with his daughter Julie. Julie is in love with a man named Ben Hendricks who arrives in Martinique from the United States. Hendricks becomes fascinated by the lush tropical surroundings and the easy-going lifestyle of the islanders. He takes Julie on holiday to St. Thomas and they fall in love. However, Julie's father, Samuel, disapproves of Hendricks and the relationship causes tension between father and daughter.

Julie eventually leaves to join Hendricks in St. Thomas, but the relationship soon disintegrates. Hendricks becomes violent and abusive and Julie eventually leaves him and returns home to Martinique. She is pregnant and Samuel reluctantly takes Julie back and arranges for her to marry a local farmer.

Years later, Julie's son, Daniel, is grown up and wants to leave the island to seek a better life in the United States. Samuel is determined that his grandson will not make the same mistakes he made and tries to prevent Daniel from leaving. However, Daniel is determined to leave and eventually gets passage on a ship to New York.

Ile is a play about love, loss and belonging. It is a powerful and moving drama about the choices we make in life and the consequences of those choices for our family.
