History:
India's history dates back to the Indus Valley Civilization, one of the world's earliest civilizations. The civilization flourished between 2500 and 1900 BC in what is now Pakistan and western India. The Vedic period, which began around 1500 BC, saw the rise of Hinduism and the development of the caste system. The Mauryan Empire (322–185 BCE) was one of the largest empires in the ancient world, and under its rule, much of the Indian subcontinent was unified. India came under the rule of Muslim invaders in the 12th century, and the Mughal Empire (1526-1858) was one of the most powerful empires in the world.
In the 18th century, India became a colony of the British Empire. The British Raj saw the development of a modern economy and infrastructure, but also the exploitation of the country's resources and the suppression of its people. India gained independence from the British in 1947, and became a republic on 26 January 1950.
